The theremin was invented by the Russian physicist and musician Lev Termen in 1920. The special feature is that the instrument is played without contact and the position of the hands at a distance from two electrodes determines the frequency and volume of the sound. The use of capacitive distance sensors enabled musicians to create new, subtle variations in tone and has inspired music history ever since. Dominik Bednarz has been building it in small series since 2007 and uses the laser cutter to customize his works.
